Explore the active earth and the night sky in the central and lower North Island of New Zealand, taking in some of the most incredible landscapes of the country.
Starting in Wellington, students will learn about the earth’s inner core, tectonic plates, earthquakes and volcanoes. The tour then heads to Wairarapa where New Zealand’s only open air astronomical observatory provides a unique opportunity to explore the night sky. Finishing at the stunning Tongariro National Park, the students will take part in project work and investigate alpine environments.
Educational tours and talks will cover astronomy and earth science while exploring the stunning scenery.

Day 1
Arrive in Wellington where you will meet your guide and learn about the earth’s inner core, earthquakes and volcanoes during the Active Earth programme at Te Papa. Explore the skies through multimedia exhibits and a workshop at Space Place, followed by a ride on the Cable Car!
Day 2
Take a tour and educational programme at Zealandia, the world’s first-fully fenced urban Eco sanctuary. Head to Wairarapa and visit Stonehenge Aotearoa Star Safari, for a fascinating educational programme at New Zealand’s only open air astronomical observatory.
Day 3
Travel to Tongariro National Park where you will take part in a hands-on project focused on investigating alpine environments. You will also learn about the history and cultural heritage of this incredible place.
Day 4
Continue with the project, carrying out practical investigations, gathering scientific data and learning about alpine ecosystems and conservation.
Day 5
Transfer to Wellington or Auckland to end the tour and fly back to Australia.
